Uhuru Wholefoods
oxfordshire

Uhuru (which means Freedom in Swahili) first came into existence in 1974 when a group of students started selling crafts from the ‘third world’ in premises opposite the present ones.

They then sold sackfuls of beans and also started a café selling good value wholefoods for students. In 1977 Uhuru moved to their current premises and carried on with the concept of what was then definitely not mainstream, that of wholefoods.

By the ‘80’s more companies started making yoghurts and soya cheese suitable for vegetarians (who can eat dairy products) and vegans (who can’t eat dairy products). Annette and her team give dietary advice to people who need gluten free diets and those with other allergies. The attraction of the stock is that it is wheat free and gluten free.

Uhuru now also offer a number of other products including a small range of supplements and vitamins. They have also moved into body products which include hemp and tea tree lotions and rainwater henna shampoo. Eco friendly cleaning products are also sold at Uhuru.

They probably have the widest range of herbal teas in Oxford from peppermint tea to ginkgo tea and ayurvedic herbal tea ( based on an ancient Indian medicine) plus throat, detox and deep breathing tea to name just a few.

There is a good selection of organic wines and beers, all suitable for vegetarians and vegans. As much as possible Uhuru try to source their stock locally, especially bread, eggs and oats.  They pride themselves on making their own muesli which is hugely popular and also cater for macrobiotics with a range of Japanese type foods ranging from misos to seaweed.

Uhuru is very proud of its friendly, personal and flexible service; testament to this is their loyal customer base which is forever expanding.
